Firebird is an open-source, SQL relational database management system based on the open source edition of InterBase initially released by Borland Software Corp, previously known as Inprise Corp. Developed in C and C++, Firebird provides extensive support across major hardware and software platforms including Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. It encompasses numerous ANSI SQL standard features, allowing simultaneous OLTP and OLAP operations through its multi-generational architecture, and supporting stored procedures and triggers.

Firebird adopts a multi-generational architecture, also known as multi-version concurrency control, utilizing record versions instead of read/write locks and transaction logs to ensure external concurrency and consistency. In this system, the previous version of every modified record is retained as long as it’s needed by at least one transaction. Each record version is attributed to the transaction that created it, and transactions are aware of other currently active transactions.
