Firebird is an open-source, SQL-based relational database management system, originating from the open source edition of InterBase initially released by Borland Software Corp, previously known as Inprise Corp. Developed using C and C++, Firebird offers extensive support across major hardware and software platforms, encompassing Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. It comprises numerous ANSI SQL standard features, enabling concurrent OLTP and OLAP operations through its multi-generational architecture, and supports stored procedures and triggers.

Firebird utilizes a multi-generational architecture, often referred to as multi-version concurrency control, using record versions instead of read/write locks and transaction logs to ensure external concurrency and consistency. In this approach, the previous version of every modified record is retained for as long as needed by at least one active transaction. Each record version is authenticated by the transaction that created it, and transactions are aware of other currently active transactions.
